Hi All

I wonder is somebody could give me some advice, I have just bought my first 60l tank and have decide that I want to keep some neon tetras and guppies in the tank.
What I am wondering is how many of each can my tank roughly take? Should I add anything else to the tank?
Any advice would be most appreciated as I am hoping my tank will turn out to be a nice colourful community tank.
Cheers

if u stick with the rough guide of 1 inch of fish per gallon u wont really go wrong i think 60l works out roughly 16-17g so u could have say 10 neons and 4-5 guppies ish :)

jen

i hav a juwel 60 litre
i hav a shoal of 8 neon tetra wiv 4 black neon and 4 harliequin rasbora
u could just replace the harlequins wiv more neons tho if u prefer them
also i hav 4 platies which are like guppies but are very hardy.
anythin else u like? :good:

i have a tank of the same size with 3 neons (getting some more soon) 6 guppies (males) and 6 platies (2m 4f) and i think i have room for a few more here and there, it would of course depend also on wether the tank was planted and what the filtration is.

but 10 neons sounds good and if you go all male guppies then i would say you could have 6-8 if mixed then a trio 1m 2f

not sure if you know about cycling or not so if not then THIS! should help you

HI All

Thanks for your reply's
This is the tank I bought off ebay:

I was thinking of having a planted tank, am I correct in thinking this is the best way to go?
I believe my tank has got an under gravel filtration system, although I don't believe the manufactures claims at all that I don't need to change the water for a year, I am sure that must be asking for trouble.
lilfishie thanks for the cycling link, that sounds very helpful just what I need,
Thanks again

i'm sure most will agree with me here but nost undergravel filters are crap so to speak
looking at the measurements of the tank it just doesn't add up to me

I can't access the page.

What are the measurements of the tank?

I've not used a under gravel filter, but from stuff I've read here and elsewhere, they seem very unpopular, so you might want to think about getting another filter.

and yes, you're right not to believe that water should only be changed once a year. Most people do a partial water change every week or two.

I have a 60lt, planted lightly at the moment, but looking to add more - I have 7 Zebra Danios and 5 juvinile Rosy Barb - they are going great - I think a shoal of 2 species are suitable for a 60lt tank, but agree that an undergravel filter is not really worth the hassle - get a cheap internal hang on (I got mine for 15 australian) that will filtrate a heap of water per hour (mine does 240litres/hr) and keep up the partial water changes. I gravel vac (I have playsand as a substrate) once a fortnight and change roughly 30-40% of water once a week.

i hav plastic plants in mine cos i hav neva really understood about the real ones and lighting issues
in my 300 litre coming soon tho i mite try some plastic mixed with the real ones and if the reals 1s do well ill take the plastic out

Hi All

Thanks for your input, I will definitely consider another filter. I know what you mean about the 60l the first time I put the sizes through the calculator, I thought that something has got to be wrong. Then I realised after I got my tape measure out, the sizes they are quoting includes the frame of the tank. When I just remeasured the glass part of the tank it does work out at 60l (1190mm* 121* 470). The only reason I bought this tank is because I wanted a wall hanging tank for my office. Yes the tank cost me 310 pound including postage, I know it does seem a bit excessive, when you think about what you can get for that sort of money.
Here is a another link to the manufactures web site for anybody who cannot access the Ebay link.

I will some photos on here when I have it setup, hopefully it should look quite impressive.
Can anybody tell me the best way of finding if my under gravel system is any good?
Thanks again
