She seems to be hanging around the cave the big male has dug in the substate under a piece of sandstone, is this a sign she may want to spawn?

I'de say yes. they are on the way to spawn or breed. good luck!!

Not wishing to hyjack the thread but my bristlenoses have just had babies, it a planted tank with wood caves and plenty of hiding places, i counted 35 babies i could see this morning!! The question is how many do they usually have?

The number of fry depends on the age/size of the female, up to 100 for a large one. Younger/smaller females will produce smaller numbers of eggs, but they will produce more as they grow.
