Ok...so I've found some info. One source says that males and females can be kept in a group of one male and four females (but it doesn't say what size tank
). Another source says that they can be kept together in groups, regardless of their sexes, so long as they're in a heavily planted tank. I've read that they eat mainly live foods. Would they also be able to eat frozen/freeze dried bloodworms and pellets?

J/k,J/K!! First, what sort of tank space do you have available? We can fill that bad boy up.
These guys are really tough as nails. They are. I do huge water changes (like 90%) every other day and I just fill it up with a hose and add dechlorinator, they're not even sensitive to it at all. I used to worry sick when I first started doing that with them,but they don't care.
They eat anything, pellets, frozen and live. I prefer frozen and live but when I'm in a pinch for time I throw some pellets in, or crushed "color bits" and they go to town. I'll send some cultures for you as well so you have live on hand.
I would keep them in multiple duos. You can easily get away with three or four pair in a ten gallon, provided they have enough places to call their own (such as wood etc). I have those wild caught bettas living together in half full tens and twenties, it's funny to look in and see a nest in each corner where each male has staked claim.
These guys (mine) get along remarkably. If they DO breed some day, which they most likely will, I'm not sure how that will work out in a community. That's where I'm inexperienced and confused. I guess you can just leave the male with a nest in the community tank and see if anyone survives OR you could pull the nest and move it to a nursery tank, I'm really not sure. I'm sure that if that happened here I would run around like a chicken with my head cut off for a minute THEN I think I'd go with the "pulling the nest via a cup" move.
Shipping for 8-10 should only be around 25.00. That box I sent this week had 6 and it was like 23.00, but I think I put too much water and the box was huge.
Jennie~ LMAO! That was basically it. He was just mouthing at that red guy hard and the red was just rolling over and taking it?! I was shocked and almost disappointed in the red I mean, stick up for yourself already!
One more edit for Brooke, remember that smaragdina aren't aggressive in the same way that splendens are. even if they rough house, thats all it is! They don't fight to kill, it's more of an "artsy" fight where they display and wrestle around. They don't go for kill shots like splendens.

Live cultures would be great! I ordered some from Aquabid, but had trouble with the seller and they got lost in the mail. By the time they got to me they were dead and I didn't feel like dealing with them.
I've got a few empty 10 gallons, I'm sure one of them would LOVE to house some smaragdina! So...feel free to send me however many will fill one up! I've got some driftwood that used to be in a turtle tank. I suppose I can boil that and toss it in there with some live plants? Do you think they would like sand as substrate? Any other suggestions for a tank setup?
I'm going out of town for the weekend. I'll be back Monday or Tuesday. Probably Tuesday. I can send out a money order to you on Monday.

I use a sponge filter in their tank, but it's an awesome filter and keeps the water really clean (I bought it after the cichlid convention for 4 bucks, I only bought two, I'm still beating myself up for not taking more!), so yes, I would recommend one but nothing too drastic.

I feel sort of bad for them because I never noticed until recently how weird it looks looking down through the glass at the shelves below I don't suppose they mind too much as they know no different, but yeah,they'd love sand,I'm sure
I have to ship fish to Synirr and Sorrell on Monday, so I can do them then for a Tuesday delivery if that's cool with you. I'll PM ya. That way I can do all the shipping in one worrysome day
