Hi, I am absolutely extatic because my discus have laid eggs!!!!!!
I have a few questions though and some problems to solve if you all wouldn't mind helping me a bit?

To start with I will tell you the story...
It all started about 1 year and a few months ago I bought my very first dicus lol and I put it in a community tank with several other fish. He lived perfectly for all this time and overcame every situation thrown at it. Then all of a sudden 1 and a half weeks ago I bought 5 more discus. Some of you may have already seen the pictures in the pictures forum. Anyway There were 1 or two minor problems to do with stress but these were very easily dealt with. I bought 2 large discus for £18 each of this fantastic supplier in Guisborough and 3 smaller ones hopeing that eventually I might get a bredding pair. Of course it is the dream of most discus keepers to one day breed his/her favourite fish of all time! Anyway they have now breed but there are 1 or 2 problems, to start with they ran out of space when laying the eggs so there aren't many.

Anyway... Now I have 6 discus and 2 other completely random fish in my tank, yet what I really want is for the eggs to hatch. What would I have to do to ensure this?

Also, as you may have noticed, because of the fact that I was nowhere near prepared for them to breed I have hardly any breeding ecuiptment e.g. a breeding cone. And so the discus have laid the eggs on the top of the filter intake pipe (but they are not close enough to get sucked in by a long shot). Therefor I can't remove the eggs like I would with a piece of slate etc.

I already have 3 tanks and have been told that this is my limit however i am quite confident that I will be able to get another breeding tank, even so it will take a while to set up.

If I think of anything else I will post some more.

If you want to know the params just ask but I'm not sure weither or not these are relevant?

Hi and well done,

I wouldnt worry about breeding them just yet. Wait to get a separate tank set up so you can move the pair into it.

Somthing like 3ft x 18 x 18 would be a good start but bigger is always better.

It wont be that easy for you to get rid of the eggs if you even wanted. Let me just make a brief summary of what can happen. The pair of discus that laid the eggs will protect the eggs. They will get very territorial when it comes to protecting the eggs. So when the eggs hatch, they will be next to the pair for protection and the discus pair will do everything possible to protect there young fry. The discus pair will take turns caring for the fry. They will do that by carrying the fry amoung themselves. The fry will eat the mucus that the discus produce on there skin during breeding. So the only solution I can see is for you to take out the eggs by yourself. I am just saying :dunno:

hi, Thanks for the brief revision period, but just to let you know the eggs have already been eaten :p lol

I put in 6 of my home breed mozambican mouth brooders (MMB) and they got eaten over night.
