Well my crab almost died yesterday. I had a nitrate spike and he almost died. I transfered him to a contianer that you keep animals in. Now I found him lieing on his back and such in the big container. I am wondering if he could also be getting ready to molt?

Is he still moving? If its a red claw crab, a little white line between the back pair of legs usually means its ready to moult.

They are usually strong enough to stay upright though. Is it in water? and is the water from the tank?

This puzzles me. You don't generally have a nitrate spike. Nitrate is the final product of the nitrogen cycle, and is relatively slow in forming. Are you sure something else didn't happen?

I hope your crab is okay, though. :(

pendragon!

I had a fiddler crab who everytime he was transferred, or if I rearranged the tank, he would lay on his back for a few days and then be fine. I think it can also have to do with stress as well as molting. Also the company that I buy fish from online says that crabs may be on their backs when they arrive due to stress from shipping. Hope this helps.

Its red claw and it might not be nitrate it might be the other thing that sounds like nitrate whatever it is. I don't know. It is moving. I just gave it fresh water (Its in a small container till it gets better). I gave it different water then from the tank.
