My cousin, who is called Abby, has 2 dwarf gouramis, 2 blue dwarf gouramis, 2 honey gouramis, a catfish, 4 dwarf corydoras, 2 mickey platys, 2 swordtails, 2 guppies and a Siamese fighting fish!

She wanted me to ask this fourum a question to do with the Siamese fighting fish! She has had her 750l tank for a year and a bit and recently she has noticed her Siamese being attacked by the gouramis and guppies. When she told me this I was confused myself because I thought Siamese fish has to be in a tank on their own because they are aggressive to other fish! But when she told me the gouramis and guppies where attacking the Siamese I got so confused!

In my opinion, I thought it was the other way round, Siamese attacked the guppies and gouramis and all fish! And what's even stranger is the fact the Siamese is a male!! Don't they get jealous of guppies tales and attack them?? I've literally never heard anything as strange as this. Please help!!

There is no surprise here; I have so often stated that Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) are not community fish. This scenario only proves it yet again.

Gourami and Betta are anabantids, and the males of all species are territorial. The degree they exhibit this varies from species to species, and sometimes individual fish can be better or worse in aggressive behaviours, but it is an inherent trait of the species and should be recognized and understood before species are acquired or combined.

A 750 liter (200 gallon) tank [if you typed that correctly] may seem huge, but this is not going to rescind the natural traits of the fish. Sometimes it is just a matter of time.

The gourami species here may work out together in this large of a tank, but the Betta should be removed if your cousin values the health and welfare of her fish.

The dwarf cories need a much larger group, 9+, and a sand substrate. And temperatures lower than the other fish prefer, so this is not a good combo either.

Byron.

Trust her to pick the worst fish!! Yes it's a 750l tank. I will tell her to remove the Siamese and Corys straight away! Thanks for helping Abby :)
