I have just noticed this morning my Convent Zebra Cichlid has laid eggs all over the bottom of my filter pump. A couple of days ago she dug a huge hole next to the pump. She now will not leave the eggs and chases any other fish away!

I have only had my Tank for 8 months and in desperate need for any advice.

I only have 1 Zebra Cichlid but I do have a red jewell cichlid which must be the father!! I guess.

No idea how this works with fish!! lol

What do i do next? Shall I setup a seperate small tank for the zebra cichlid fish and the fry?

Please help! :good:

If the eggs do hatch, you must have plenty of cover (plants, rocks caves etc...) that way the fry won't be eaten.

But like you stated, you might want to put the fry (alone) into a separate tank.

This is done easily by transferring the eggs to a new tank before they hatch.

The eggs have now turned white and some have disappeared! They need to be fertilized dont they? But I only have 1 convint cichlid (female) and a red jewell cichlid that wont work will it?

Shall I buy a male convint zebra cichlid for next time?

Fish dont cross breed do they?

Cichlids do cross breed a lot, but the only problem with jewell Clichlids is that they are really picky who they decide to breed with.

The convicts on the other hand are very easy to breed, and by buying a male Convict, you are pretty much going to expect them to breed a lot.

Try to get a male Convcit that is a little bigger than the female.

Thanks mate.

If the eggs have turned white does that mean they wont hatch?

I am not for sure about that.

But I have heard that after 3 days you should be able to see a little black dot in the middle?

I can do some research and get back to you in a little while.

If this is your first batch of eggs, do not be upset if nothing happens, the fishes need practice too...lol.

Thanks for your help.

I have gone out and brought a brand new smaller tank today (girlfriend let me! lol). Im guna take the female convict out as she is being very aggressive towards all the other fish.

I have also brought a male convict and the 2 can now have there own tank.

Well in no time you will have convict fry if you have a male and female. They will be Very good parents and raise them close to an inch in size. Hard thing to do is find them a home. Good luck.
