Hi, my brothers got a 54 litre tank which hasnt been looked after properly and has brown alge everywhere, my mum decided to clean the whole tank out by doing a 100% water change and cleaning the filter media all with untreated tap water and also for some reason putting this product called BSB aquarium doctor which has turned the tank bright aluminum green which she did because of the spotted sucker fish that died this morning (21cm Long)...can someone tell me weather by doing this to the tank is GOOD or BAD?..of course i know this is bad but i need my mum to read your comments so she understands...Cheers

Kind Regards, Thuggerz

To put it basically, your mother has pretty much killed all of the fish in there.

Not that a 21cm fish should be anywhere near a 54L tank in the first place.

Hi ombomb, well the tank started off with 23 fish and the spotted sucker fish wasnt that big when he got it....just to let you that the 4 remaining fish are in a bucket. Do you think it's best for me to clean the whole tank then refill it with treated tap water and just throw the fish in?

i wouldnt do anymore cleaning.

the cleaning thats done will of killed off all the bacteria thats needed to keep the tank stable.

adding any chemicals that alter the water is also a bad thing cos each time you add new water for water changes then the water will be different to whats in the tank - this will shock the fish.

23 fish is too many for 54 litres even if they were tetras.

I disagree, if the tank is full of new water thats full of treatment, you're better off refilling without adding the green stuff.

Weeeellll.

Washing the bio-media under tha tap will have killed all the beneficial bacteria and send the tank into a cycle.

The chems will not save the fish from a serious bout of ammonia, and then nitrite, poisoning as the tank settles tiself down again.

I think the phrase "just throw the fish in" is rather inappropriate. The tank needs setting up again and all the usual checks completed until the readings show it is ready for its inhabitants. The fish in the meantime need re-housing until this process is completed, and then carefully introduced to their tank.

Is it possible for you to take the fish to your LFS? It really is necessary.
