Not sure if this is a girl or boy, was told it was a girl. havent named it yet because of that.

this is samson.

Id be tempted to say the first is a male double tail plakat because of the long ventricals and pointy anal fin

Like you say Tilly the shape of the anal and length of the ventrils does point to being male.

Will he flare up at a mirror......see if he does and whether he has a full beard which in a male will go all the way under the chin.

Having chased around the tank with a mirror like a plonker for ages, he/she couldn't be bothered with it, so I did a naughty and shoved he/she into a breeding tank and put it in with sampson, sampson threw a beard fit and yet no attempt to damage, meanwhile he/she just ignored sampson and swam away with no beard!!.

Not the way I would recommend doing it.....the damage they can cause can be lightning quick sometimes. Did you acclimatize him/her to the new tank or just put him/her straight in?

Don't forget you just put another fish into someone elses territory and they may have swum off because they felt stressed and intimidated especially if still young.

acclimatize, well if you call shoving it in a bag then letting it sit for ten or so in the tank, then shoving it in a breeding tank, then into the main tank, yep I did.

have you ran round a tank trying to carry a 4' mirror round it chasing a fish that wont sit still, dunno about the fish being stressed but I sure was......

Did you mean 4ft or 4inches lol

A less stressful way of trying to find out would be to isolate him/her in a breeding net or one of those floating breeding traps. Float something on the top eg a small piece of amazon frogbit, bubblewrap etc and see if he/she makes a nest under it. Whilst in there you could also try the mirror again (a small one)!!!

If there are no signs after a few days then let her back out but keep a close eye on here. We bought a bunch of juvie girls last year and after about a month we realised that one of them was male. There was no aggression in the beginning but obviously as he matured he started throwing his weight around abit and we removed him!!!

4 foot, in fact it was longer than that, it was an old mirror of the back of a large dressing table, its the only mirror I could find.

Will do as suggested and also keep an eye in her.
