Joe, my Betta, just receive his new home. I just hope I am doing ok. Please bear in mind that I am a newB to fishworld. (About 6 months in)

I purchased him a 2 1/2 gallon home. I installed a small airstone (he loves the bubbles...I learned this when he was in my 10 gallon....had to remove him...I was new...and he was in with some Black Skirts..I think they were nippin' on his fins...I hospitaled him for about 2 weeks) and I installed a disposable filter that hooks to airline.

My questions:

1. Is this a good start? He seems to be pretty happy. He is eating well and very active.

2. Should I use some rocks from my cycled 10g (inside a stocking) to help cycle this tank quicker? Will snails transfer also if inside a stocking/panty hose?

3. Any additional suggestions?

Thanks!!

:D

I would add some gravel in a sock to the betta's new tank just to help the cycling process go along. Make sure if you don't have a filter you do plenty of water changes and even if you have one, weekly water changes are always good. I do 50% water changes on my female's 10 gallon everyday along with a gravel vac because she doesn't have a filter in her tank. Whatever rocks you add make sure they won't hurt your betta. If you are talking about gravel in a sock it should be fine. I just scooped some gravel out of my cycled 29 gallon and dumped it into my 10 gallon with my female betta.

For a newbie you're doing REALLY good. I'd say better than how I started out definately. I filled a 10 gallon with tons of fish that would get way too big because the person at my LFS told me I could and I didn't even cycle it! Also getting a 2.5 gallon for your betta as a start is GREAT to hear. Many people just think they can throw them in a jar and they'll survive. :-(

Hi!
Nice job on the tank so far.
I'd have to say that you really don't need any filtration in a 2.5 gallon tank, I (personally) would take it out. Less stress on the fish and it's just really not necessary. You will need to do water changes about every 5 days or so, but you'll have to do frequent (partial, at least) water changes anyway.

As for the airstone, it's fine if he likes it, but they don't NEED to have that either.
Is your tank heated?
If not, you should invest in a little mini heater by Hydor. they just suction right to the side of your tank and you're off. They raise the temp about 3 - 4 degrees above room temp. They're great!
