my betta now has new tank mates

Hiya, id say with that smaller size tank, maybe a few neons, or an apple snail ? if ur after sumthing that can clear then glass, id say either a small pleco, (one that will always be small) or an apple snail, unless u wud like a sucking loach, but they can get big, and then spiteful cus theres not enough space 4 them. hope that helps ?

I have always kept African Dwarf Frogs with mine....sorry, I'm not sure if that's the same as a Congo Frog? Mine is in a 10g now with 2 ADF and 3 Ottos.

HTH :)

I'm not sure whether congo frogs are the same as dwarfs or not but if not, they are too large :p The only frog I know of that is small enough is the ADF.

Neons are not a good idea because there is no telling how the betta will react to them. Also, they need to be in groups of 6 at least so the tank's too small and they get stressed out and sick very very easily if not kept in perfect conditions (this includes soft water, low pH and correct temperature (does your betta tank have a heater).

Even the smallest plecos are too messy for such a small tank. Clown plecos and bristlenose plecs don't exceed 6 inches but are still too large and messy.

Sucking loach? This is one of the names given to the 'chinese algae eater'. They grow to 10 inches and become very aggressive as adults.

A couple of otos may be a better choice. Or stick to non-fish tank-mates like ADFs, snails and algae-eating, amano, or ghost shrimp.

You could also try a platy or 2 (males only - you don't want fry in this size tank) though there is no guarantee of the betta liking them (like the tetras).

I'm not sure I agree with the shrimp in the betta tank. Most bettas will see seafood for dinner . A cory or small algae eater would benefit the tank the most.

Some shrimp do ok with bettas - depends on the betta.

Cories are shoaling fish and there isn't space for the minnimum four.

I agree with the algae eater - otos are small and peaceful.

ID LOVE frogs again but i guess im too bad with them... and costing £5.95 each.. and 3 for £15 i dont think i can afford them to keep dying.

I wouldnt mind some platies... and my betta had a few river shrimp iin with him til they died and he didnt even get them then. But i was worried bout the platies because they have big eyes... or some that could be eaten...

Id love chocolate gouramis.. anyone heard of this combo...? oh wait... gouramis... why cant they go together with the betta again?

i wanted to get some pencilfish... wat u guys reckon

i dont suppose i could have mollies in their? like one or two? balloon mollies... but then again they got biggish eyes too

Chocolate gouramies are *extremely* fragile fish. Gouramies won't get along with bettas because bettas have a tendency to go for anything that looks similar to themselves - this includes long-finned colorful guppies and the closely-related gouramies.

Pencilfish wont work because they like to be kept in groups, so, like the cories, your tank doesn't have enough space.

A couple of male platies would be ok - I don't understand what you are worried about with the eyes? Only males though - so they don't mate or store sperm and give birth (females may become pregnant 4 months after being bought... even without a male because they can store sperm from a male at the LFS).

I still stand by my suggestion - otos - 2 of them, would make an excellent addition, are attractive and will eat algae too :) Plus they like the lower levels so would balance your betta out nicely.

With mollies there are several factors to consider. For a start, they grow large. Larger than guppies or platies, and can reach 4 inches in extreme cases (usualy around 2.5-3 inches though). As such, I would only keep one. But keeping one may be a problem because a lone male can (occasionaly - it's rare but may be risky) sometimes become aggressive and nip (nothing serious but a betta wouldn't enjoy it) and you don't want a female because they can store sperm and give birth in your tank up to 4 months after being bought, plus they are larger than males.

Khulies grow to 4 inches and like to be kept in groups so aren't realy suitable... I don't think the betta could take a platy's eye out... Bettas don't like tetras much :p I still think otos are the best choice.

Everything mentioned so far will work ok.

I have my 6 bettas in a 40 gal with most of the fish mentioned in this thread (except gouramis). Of course my tank is larger so you need to take overstock considerations when picking a fish.

But in regards to ottos, kuhlis, ADF's and tetras, my bettas get along fine. They keep a pecking order among themselves and leave the other fish alone.
