Any ideas how to save my betta's life? It is new--2 weeks here --from Walmart and now it has serious finrot. This just developed over the last twelve hours. Any ideas on how to save my fish's life? Please reply soon as I do not know how long my fish has as this is moving very fast. Thanks!

you can go back to wal-mart and buy some
  • fungus clear (I no this is for fin rot)
  • betta fix (i haven't used this one before, so not sure if it fixes this or not)
he'll prolly be okay... How bad is his tail so far? Is it more than halfway gone?

how 'bout a pic if you can get one?

Can't get a pic but the rear fin is at least a third gone frayed like someone tried to comb it. I am going to the pet store or 'Walmart tomorrow to see if there are any products like you mentioned. Thanks for the help. I did put 1/2 teaspoon of salt into the water with hopes that that helps like one site said to do. I guess we will see what happens with that if he survives the night. Thanks again.

I've also heard nice clean warm water and some aquarium salt will do a world of good :( Good luck to you and your poor little fellow! I hope he gets well soon!

he'll prolly be okay. My fish had fin rot for days and days before he died from it. (i was treating him for ragged fin, not fin rot :*) )

you really need to worry when it reaches the base of his tail. Other than that, he should be okay. His tail may not grow back, just a warning. My betta I have caught rot, and his tail is only half as long as it's supposed to be.

(Just to let you know bettas from wal-mart are more expensive, and are of lesser quality than other not chain lps's are. I've had 3 bettas from there. All got rot, 2 died :( )

ragged is just where it got snagged on something. It's nothing serious really, just something like the fish chewed himself or he got cut on the filter strainer or something of the sort.

Rot is a fungus, and a little more serious. I guess you'd say that ragged fin's treatment is like neosporin for a cut, rather than a disease killing med.

I think you should go a head and get the rot meds. If he don't get worse or better, then try parasite clear, or melafix/bettafix.

parasiteclear and mela fix both at walmart

It really wouldn't hurt to keep alittle of all of it around, just incase... edit: unless it expires, then jus get it when you need it

What is the best way to clean the tank when/if this fish dies--so the next fish does not get this disease with the fins too?

This is definitely fin rot--it has not snagged on anything. It is moving up the fin and does not look pretty at all. He seems to know that something is not right with it too because of the way he is twitching it--I feel so sorry for him.

drain all the water and flush it! Boil a few pots of water adn soak all of you decor in it NOT LONG OR IT WILL MELT. Then pour fresh boiled water over your gravel (if you have a plastic tank, use caution!!!) Then pour fresh boiled water in you filter and boil media. DON"T LEAVE THE FILTER"S STUFF OR THE FILTER IN THE HOT WATER FOR LONG EITHER!
This saves you from melting everything.

Then after boiling water has been there for a second or two, drain that water and leave it BONE dry for 24 hrs. Then it should be safe.

PLEASE use caution!!! all the stuff for aquaria is plastic, it will melt. It wouldn't let the water boil for long, just a second or two then use it.

DON'T reuse the same boiled water for more than 1-2 decorations! keep boiling new water for each one.

But I hope you don't need to do this.

Good luck, and keep me posted on his condition!

Cleaning it will be a bit scary because the tank is acrylic and the other stuff is plastic. I am throwing out the glass discs that I have been using on the bottom so that will be no problem to deal with that and I will put on a new aeration stone on the air supply tube.

Thanks soooo much for all of your help!!!

well then you could dip a cloth in boiling water and wipe it out good, you should be okay, but you do need to boil gravel, so you'll have to remove it :(

EDIT: DUH!! glass discs are your gravel! Its 1:50 am here, i tiyad

why would you use parasiteclear on fin rot? thats silly...use aquarium salt 1tblsp per gallon of water.

my betta has fin rot along with all my other fish apart from my tetra.
Is treating it with melafix and aquarium salt going to be enough?

*worried sick*
