my fish has this growth, and has had it for over a year. after extensive search, i thought it was a benign tumor. Can Anyone diagnose this? is there anything i can do for him? (view picture for growth).

My tank is 5 gallons, moderately planted, and has good levels on everything when i take a sample to the pet store.

It also has an air stone( keep it moderately bubbly) and heater (i keep it in the 78-80 degree range).
There is a filter as well, that i change about once every 2 - 3 months.

I feed the fish twice a day (2 - 4 pieces) i aim for 3, and do about every time.

Ok, now with that info and this picture (i circled the growth in question), can anyone tell me what is up, or what i can do for him?

UPDATE: after a week of care, the growt hdid not change, and since then, the fish has been replaced in its tank. In the tank the fish lives fine, but the growth is muc hmore noticeable. It is almost the entire height of the fish now, is white, and has red bloody looking slivers in it.

P.S. i also own a website, http://www.nerdcastle.net/... in case you were wondering why my picture was there...
looks like a hole but it could be a parasite

He's had it for a year you say? Eeek. Have you ever done a round of anti-parasitics on him? I've heard of some parasites causing protrustions and ulcerations. However, with a size like that, I'd lean towards it being a mass. Has it grown since you got him, or stayed as it is?

it has grown... it used to be small, and has grown slowly over the year.

i started treating it with lifeguard all-purpose tablets. It said its for early stages, but i don't know whatelse to do... it treats parasites and fungus... Is that any good? I also put it in a seperate bowl so that i didn't kill the aqarium. the bowl is probably a little under a gallon.

well, i did it, but it didnt make a bit of difference. All that happened was that the fish spent a few days in a bowl.. The growth is still jsut as big.

I'm going to just let him live it out in his aquarium. It doesn't seem to bother him anyways.

OH MY GOD! It has gotte nconsiderably bigger, and has obvious spots where it is red (is it a cut).

The fish still swims well and seems to do alright, but the growth is almost all the way up and down his body...

Im starting to wonder if i should kill him or something...

I have no idea what to do...

Euthanasia is something you want to seriously consider. Does your fish still seem happy? Seem to be still having a good quality of life? If he's having trouble swimming, lowering his water level might help with that.

I had a goldfish when I was younger that lived for years (5-6) that had a rather large tumor (that didn't respond to treatment) He was happy for all of those years...

Personally, I would let him live. But you know your fish. If he looks like he's under a lot of pain, it is something to consider....I personally have never done this, but adding a lot of clove oil to the fishes water seems to be the most "humane" method....other then a quick swift blow to the fish....(which I could never do) I believe there may be a pinned topic on the exact instructions on this....

I usually add "stress coat" to the fishes water to help with the benefical stress coat....No offense...but the edges of his fins don't look too great either....how often do you change his water? Does he have any tank mates??

The most important thing is to make sure his water is pristine clean...

Anyone else have any suggestions??

yeah, i do a weekly 5- 10 % water change, but i have decided he is happy and doesnt appear to struggle so he will be fine.

i will change 10% his water daily for a week or so to see if maybe that helps ( i recently moved his tank to a lower light area, so maybe it can't support stuff living in it?

he has no tankmates.
