Do all male betta's make bubble nest's periodically? I've had my boy for over a year and he's never made a bubble nest :/ is that normal?

Hi Kelly-Jo. From my experience, male Bettas are stimulated to build nests by the barometric pressure drop just before stormy weather - in their native Thailand, they breed in the monsoon season. If you live somewhere that doesn't expose your guy to that sort of stimulus (say you live in somewhere cold and he's in a heated tank 24/7) then he's not likely to build. Then again, he may just be lazy  Are you wanting him to breed? If not, then his lack of nesting instinct won't harm him - like any living thing, theres some that perform as expected, some that wont perform as expected and others that are just off the charted map :)

As Devilish Angelfish has said it depends upon ths fish. My last male built about 4-5 - my current male builds a lot more. Incidentally, I've had a female for about 16 months and just last week she decided to build a whopping nest...

Is your current too strong for him? My daughters betta didn't build a nest till I turned the spray bar against the glass to dampen the current.

I have one male who will build a bubble nest a few times a week, another who will build a nest after every water change and the third has never built one at all.

It could be that the current is too strong like juggler75 said, it could also be that he just doesn't feel like he needs too. I wouldn't worry. As long as he is active, is eating and his colours are vibrant there is nothing wrong :)
