My Bare Bottom

I have made the choice to close down the community tank and go with 6-8 discus. Now reading the discus forums they advise going bare bottom to start with and i though yuk....but after seeing aome of the tank with some over sized plant pots in the back holding some swords and a bit of wood i thought they look just as nice as normal planted....different but nice. Any users on here use BB that looks nice?

I've always used sand. I can't imagine BB looking right... Why was it suggested to go BB with discus? I'd assume you want a good deal of substrate so you could plant the tank heavily.

It aint for me. I just dont see the point, not in a display tank anyway. I can understand somewhat in a marine tank cos they like ridiculous flow. I reckon even if you do a great scape, its still gonna feel a bit, Eh. You bored of the community Al?

Yeah im bored already and everything keeps breeding which sounds good but most fish get aggresive when looking after there fry even as big as 350L.

reading up on the discus seems bare bottom is for poo patrol, haveing 6 or so in 75G/350L can produce serious waste

That's awesome! I'd be tempted by that if I ever had a fish room. I really hate the look of bare bottomed tanks. Although, I actually think a layer of play sand would be cheaper and less hassle...

does your tank glass lay flat on the stand, or is it lifted by a supporting brace?

If it's lifted, you may have enough room for a piece of made-to-measure perspex underneath which you could decorate in the same way. Might give you a very similar effect wihtout the worry of spray painting the actual tank.

Now thats a good idea, yes all new juwel tank have floating base....infact thinking about i might be able to get some 2000 wt and dry sand papper.
Think of the hassle maybe a layer of play sand as caz said is the answer here, i could still pot a few swords in the back and lift them up for spot clan without turning the over hmmmm
