she's just under 4 months old and she's just had 12 fry (I trapped her when I realised as she seemed to be having a bad time) most were deformed though :(

I think she might have mated with her brother which has caused them to have deformed tails.

I've now seperated the male from his sisters and he can go to my lfs tomorrow. I can't handle seeing babies with their tails all messed up like that. I've tipped them into the fry tank anyway. What will be will be :(

It's so sad but I'm also incredibly shocked that a four month old fish could have babies already

I think my swordie is about that age too, and this batch I have might be her first, as she hasn't dropped fry for 3 months since I got her until recently.
And I'm 99% sure their daddy is my black swordtail, as she was kept with blood-reds only, yet some of her fry had black on them.

Only one deformed tail in her batch though. Felt sorry for the critter, but it was either starvation or becoming food for the adults in that case. He couldn't even lift off the floor of the tub and swam in circles.

she's about 3cm long, she did okay but she seemed quite distressed. The other fish were hanging around her and she was swimming into things trying to get away. She let me catch her really easily so I put the trap in the fry tank, put her in there and threw a towel over the tank so it was in darkness. When I went back to check on her (about 20 minutes later) there were 10 fry in the bottom. About 7 of them had bent tails and were just sitting on the bottom not moving.

I then found 2 in the big tank and managed to catch them with the turkey baster.

I put Mum back in the main tank and sprinkled some flakes in - she was starving hungry. I've seen another fry since but couldn't catch it quick enough - it's probably been eaten now.

The problem is - her sister looks pregnant now too. These fry were born around christmas time - there was 15 in total. One died and 14 went on to grow up. I took 10 to my lfs and just kept 4 for myself. I was warned at the time by the lfs that keeping a male was a bad idea.

Anyway, he's in the fry tank with the other small fish that are going to my lfs. The other males in the my main tank are unrelated to any of my females so any further fry should be healthy

I'm glad that your mommy fish is doing well. Are you going to rehome the male?
Yes, I'm taking him to my lfs. I have some other fry that is ready to go in a week so he can go with them

That's good. YOu can always get another male when your girls get bigger (if you chose to) with them being so small, breeding may potentially hurt them badly if they start breeding monthly.

The male has gone to the lfs before I change my mind and 5 minutes ago I found 2 more babies hiding in the groove next to the filter. I've got them aswell with the turkey baster and put them in the fry tank.

I took 2 of the other larger fry with the male 'dad' so all that's in there now are very young fish. The two I just found were okay - no bend in their tail - so it looks like some of them are healthy.

It's bloodworms for tea so they're getting a treat after what's been a stressful day for both them and me!

I'm still shocked though that a fish so young could manage to give birth let alone survive it

Eeek! My surprise baby platy (well teenager now) was born on Christmas day. I can't imagine her having babies already. I really hope the male platy won't go for her yet.

One of my tiny week-old fries is already courting 2 of his siblings. FML...

OMG!!! *shocked*
Well, he hasn't got a gonopodium yet, but 3 months from now, I might be seeing him chasing the females like crazy if he survives. Just hope he won't argue with his father. Arguing with his mother would be more likely, as she made my adult male be her mule -.- Some "man" he is.

Same age as mine so if it can happen here it can happen for you too. I didn't think they were old enough yet but they've proved me wrong

Be careful of inbreeding. It can lead to birth defects - hence the fry today with bent tails - I think it was a union between brother and sister

The amount of inbreeding that went on in the shop to produce all those fish... o_O I doubt it was because of inbreeding, all my guppies never had bent tails, but swordies have always had a few damaged tail ones(usually the first ones to pop out). And I knew that the mothers and fathers were not related, as my friend knew which ones she raised and which she bought before giving them to me.

Only thing I've had was sterility in a guppy F3 generation (females never got pregnant, their spot was always orange (meaning unfertilized eggs). But the males / females tails were awesome, green with black in a flame pattern (their parents oddly had red+yellow+black flame patterned tails, but there were a few green-tailed females to begin with). And the odd endler-looking two guppies with not much color on their tails (was a dull gray and split like an endler's) but with very awesome green, red and black dots over their body. No idea how those got in there since I never had endlers.
