Hi i have a 6us gallon tank in fishless cycle and should be ok for fish this weekend was thinking about 1 male betta and 4 guppys would this be ok for the small tank

No!

Never mix bettas and guppys in a small tank as they will tear each other apart as the guppys have long fins and the betta will mistake it for another male. IT is generally said that they shouldn't ever be housed together but i have heard of it (never seen it) in large tanks and people claim to have no problems although personally i would never put a betta in a community tank, too much of a risk in my opinion.

Guppy's also need a bigger tank than 6 gals as they are a shoaling and very active fish that love to swim.

The tank would be ideal for just the betta though and well done for fishless cycleing :good:

How long have you been cycleing for and do you have a water test kit?

been cycleing for around 2 weeks maby 2 and half now no i dont have a kit but my local store said if i take a sample they will test it for me, is there anything else i could put on with the betta as i would like to but if it wont be ok for the fish then i wont. i will get some guppys in my 125liter tank then cheers

really sorry to hijack the thread but i know you say dont put male guppies and male bettas in a small bowl, does anyone know if a group of female bettas(say 3 or 4) and some male guppies could co-exist in a 350L tank (around 60g i believe)

You myt need to cycle a little longer but the test results should reveal that to you.

You could have:

6-7 pygmy cories very cute and active bottom feeders
or
2 ADFs (african dwarf frogs) require a bloodworm diet but are a great addition to the tank
or
some bettas will accept Snails in their tank too but others attack or eat them, it all depends on your bettas personality.

Correct me if im wrong anyone, but im sure you can keep apple snails with them, might get 1 myself when my tanks all cycled.

so is that 1 betta and 6-7 pygmy cories or 6-7 pygmy cories on their own i am guessing on their own and the same with the frogs cheers appriciate the help :good:

Yes apple snails can be kept with them but they do get big mind.

It just depends wether your betta is abig old grumpy guts or not

You can have:

1 betta + 6-7pygmy cories

or

1 betta + 2 ADFs

or

1 betta and a snail

Very good choice and i would have done the same :good:

Make sure you post some pics of the tank when you get them!

It's best to introduce the cories first so that if the betta is aggresive then it will not have established a territory and is far more likely to ignor them.

Most bettas cudnt give a stuff as long as there being fed lol.

thanks very much for the help think im going to go with the betta and the 6-7pygmy cories :good:

Actually guppies can do fine in 6 gallon tank as long as they are all same sex( all males or all females, but in this case I assume everyone would rather want the pretty males).

I have kept 3 males guppies with 3 neons for about 5 months now in my 5 gallon tank, and they all seem to be doing fine..although neons are not that active. Perhaps the neons need bigger tank for the swimming spaces, but my guppies are all active and doing fine.

Just to let you know in case you would prefer guppies over a betta

Yep an all female group in a 60 gallon should be OK, what else would be in there with them ?
