I have had LeeLee for 3 going on 4 years. Robust, never been sick, never any other fish with her, never bred, in a 2 gallon glass antique punch bowl, used only purified bottle water, fed every other day premium betta food, cleaned every week, never showed signs of stress or illness. I got her from a breeder friend just for the heck of it. She wasnt breeding quality. I was up rocking my daughter in the chair since she wasnt feeling well, and all of a sudden LeeLee was flipping around the bowl, like she was crazy. She looked like she was fighting herself. She even breached the water 2 times. I went to her to see what was wrong and she just floated to the bottom and now is dead. Her eyes are a bit bulgy. It was sad and scary. I have a male that is in another 2 gallon antique bowl and he is the same, healthy and nothing wrong. I got him at the same time. They have never been together and are not near each other. he seems fine. What happened?

I just had a betta and was told they dont live much over 2 years ( by another member )

So maybe it was just old age?

Sorry for you lose :(

Can't offer any advice, just sympathy.
But she did have a longer, happier life than most, and dedicated care.
That's a solid base to hold the good memories on.

Are you sure that her eyes are a bit "bulgy"? Could've been some sort of bacterial infection which caused popeye to occur.
She was an old girl though, so it very well could've just been old age :(

No chance any irritants (soap/chemicals) could have gotten in the water?

Probably just old age. I'm very sorry.

for a betta, 4 years is a very long time as most fish are opn the older side when they are sold.. mix that with shipping stress and its a reason the pet store fish look sick alot.

for you to give her 3 good years only shows how well you treated your fish with proper care and love, not just a good job but a great one. i am sorry for your loss and she will be missed but always remember there will be another little guy that needs a great home like yours.

Oh, that sounds dreadful. Poor betta...

Did you have a heater in the bowl? If so, you might want to check that it is still working properly - just wondering if perhaps the reason she was flipping about and then died could be down to electrical current escaping into the tank? This can sometimes (I've heard) happen with the heater malfunctioning and causing a power leak into the water. Hope it wasn't that but it's worth checking out in case you're thinking of replacing her (wouldn't want any dodgy electricals in the tank).

RIP LeeLee

Regards, Athena

Maybe her heart/organs were packing up due to old age hence the sudden frenzy of action then sudden death. She had a nice long life though and went quickly instead of suffering with a lingering illness. Still sad though however they die

there were no chemicals in the area, she was not at a height level that my daughter could have done anything, she was fine in the evening swimming and everything. She had just been cleaned 2 days before. She ate in the morning just fine. There was no heater or pump, nothing electrical. I believe like most people have said that she was just old. It was so sad though I had to witness this. I have a male thats the same age and I am afraid he will do the same too. Neal is my daughters favorite and my husband even talks to him at night so it will be hard to lose him soon too if this is the case.

Well, just remember that you gave those bettas a great home.
I'm sure alot of us (me included) wish we could keep our bettas for that long.
