Ive had 2 mudskippers for about 2 months now and from all the images ive seen mudskippers have bright blue of the fins and blue specks on the body, but mine dont have them? Is there only one species that has this blue, african mudskippers perhaps? Also about the mangroves, the tank kinda looks boring and i want to add some other plants to it (NOT aquatic plants). Are there any other plants that grow their roots in brackish waters, but the bulk of the plant out of water? (when i mean any other plants, i mean ones that could be purchased or specially ordered at a LFS or garden center)

Hello --

More than one species is traded. In Europe at least, the African Periophthalmus barbarus is by far the most widely traded mudskipper. There are others seen very occasionally, but this is indeed the common one. In the US, both Periophthalmus barbarus and Periophthalmus argentilineatus are common, the later in shipments from Asia.

I don't know much about identifying these fish to species. I'd strongly suggest Richard Mleczko's excellent web site, and dropping him a line if you have problems or questions. He is extremely knowledgable about these fish and has kept (and collected) a large number of species.

By the way, your question a few days back about feeding... sounds to me as if you're offering them what they want. I wouldn't worry about how "natural" their diet is, provided they're eating and remain healthy. Mudskippers are very hardy fish, as you're probably realising, providing you keep them in the right way to begin with.

Cheers,

Neale
