Hi - I now have my fish family in my tank and today I did a 50% water change and cleaned the gravel but now the water is really dirty - with bits floating in it - I got most of the rubbish with the gravel vac and obviously missed some but it looks a mess - cloudy water - will it clear up?

Also, my neons have white spot and I am going to start treating it today and I have read all the posts about it but will the treatment harm my other fish (tank inhabitants = 4 guppies, 6 harlequin rasbora, 2 corys as well as 5 neons). When reading up in another part of forum on the guppies, I think the 3 female guppies are pregnant (which I believe is quite common ) , will it harm them? I don't have space to get a separate tank for quarantine purposes, so hopefully they will be okay.

Thanks for your help.

i can't answer the question about the guppies and white spot meds but as far as your mucky water is concerned, the filter should clear that up in a few hours
:)

someone should be along soon to help you with your guppy question soon !

the white spot medication should not affect your guppy girls.

But you WILL need to get some more tanks! With 3 females (and 1 male) you're going to be inundated with fry. The girls can drop up 60 fry at a time, every 4 weeks! And given that you've got a male in there, they'll do that for the rest of their lives! You'll need to keep the fry for at least 3 months before they'll be big enough to sell, so I'd start looking for some more tanks and start cycling some more filters!

Good luck :)

The constant Guppy breeding will also shorten the females' lives considerably - they literally become worn out.

If you had that much gunk in your water, it's possible that you're a) overfeeding and b ) not doing regular enough water changes. Both will increase the ammonia in your tank and be toxic to your fish.

I have taken the lady guppies back to the LFS from whence they came because I couldn't stand the thought of the babies being eaten and the poor ladies constantly giving birth - I didn't want to be responsible for that. I got 2 more males instead - beautiful boys.

As far as the gunk is concerned, I think I may have been over-feeding and I have cut back and I am currently treating white spot so don't want to change the water just yet until the treatment is over - the levels seem to be dropping so it may be that I over-stocked in the first place to quickly after cycling. If need be I will do small water changes and re-medicate. I am keeping an eye on things.

Thanks for advice.

At the beginning, my husband was overfeeding something fierce. It was really hard for him to understand that he really needed to cut back. But he just loves watching them eat.
