Firstly can I put them in my tank whilst it's cycling? Secondly what do snails add to the bioload on my filter?

This is a 20G Tank with a sand substrate (hence why I want the snails) no fish as yet but I'm looking at a peaceful community tank.

If you are doing a fishless cycle its best not to put any fish in until its complete, no levels of ammonia or nitrites above 0 are good for fish. If you are cycling with fish, it depends on the type of fish.
Snails do add to the boiload ammonia-wise, but how much depends on the type of snail, how many there are, and how big they are or will get to :) .

It is a fishless cycle, I'm aware that I shouldn't add fish. However I was unaware of it's affect on Malaysian trumpet snails.

I wouldn't personally add them, i have had some survive in some pretty bad conditions (i once found some living in a bucket that had been there for 2 weeks with basically nothing to eat) while i have had others drop dead in cycling tanks.
They don't need pristine water quality, but they do vary a lot at least in my experience of them in how hardy they are when it comes to nitrites and ammonia- what sort of ammonia and nitrite results have you been getting recently?

I'm at the beginning of the cycle and am just starting to get nitrites. I'll wait until the cycle has finished to add the mts, I thought that would probably be the case but decided to check anyway.

Cheers for the reply.

That would probably be the safest option then if the cycle is new, if you are doing a fishless cycle it shouldn't take too long anyway until its complete :good: .
