I can't stop thinking about a fish I saw years ago called the Mozambique Mouthbreeder. Is there such a thing or is it a trade name for a particular fish ?

I think you mean this
(Google is your friend)

Google he says. I prefer old fashioned brain power and memory but a much bigger fish than what I think I remembered. That fish is a lunker and a half. In my fish keeping days I've never seen any Mouthbreeder cichlid doing its paternal thing. I bet it's something to see. Are there any smaller species a guy might keep without a six foot tank ?

I would go for red hump Geophagus. They are more complex in the mouthbrooding than mbuna, in that they provide a refuge for the fry by picking them up again and again. Rift Lake mouthbrooders release the young and take no more interest in them.
Chromidotilapia guentheri were the best "mouthbrooding show" I've ever seen, but they're uncommon as they do get to a peaceful 14-15cm. It's Geophagus steindachneri you'd want, as a smaller complex mouthbrooder.
