i once had to clean the gravel in my large fish tank before id heard of such things as gravel cleaners (which still scare me) so my dad (used to be a pretty good tropical fish keeper) suggested putting them in buckets of water, that they'd be fine overnight. i obliged. most of my fish lived, but a few died.

Bad example cause there are ways of cleaning the gravel, but maybes if moving house or something, how would you go about NOT killing your fsh?

if they are small enugh, double bag them, stick em in a box, with a heat pad, and wrap that box in a blanket/duvet

sounds good. The only fish i remember having major problems with was my male salfin molly. but he'd been having a rough time since lossing his female partner anyways.

To keep the biological filter alive you can put the gravel and filter media in a tub with enough water from the tank to keep both wet (very important!), but how well the bacteria survive will really depend on how long it has to sit like that. In any case I would keep a very watchful eye on the Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate levels of the tank after a move since it may enter a mini or full blown cycle depending on how much of the biological filter survived.

gravel vacs are really safe..I was scared at first too but they're really easy to control. When I moved I had a new tank cycled with 50 % water and new gravel/flter ect and put my piranha in 10 gallon buckets with lids in their own water for the transportation. When I got to the new tank I gradually added my old tank water from the buckets to the new cycled tank until it was 100% full and put them in/ They didn't miss a beat lol (I added the decor and plants from their old tank a few days later)
Try the gravel vac :)
