generally my South American Tetras occupy the lower 1/3 of the tank... I have noticed that the palmeri, as they mature, have moved to the top half of the tank, a shoal of them are hanging out in and around the taller hastifolia leaves... I like having some fish there... I have been thinking about adding some hatchets, as they would likely stay in the less populated upper 1/3 of the tank... I never had tetras, when I had tanks 30 years ago, as we have rock hard water, but with the adding of RO, I have a thriving South American tank and I'm finding, that they are are proving to be an interesting family of fish, I currently have 6-8 different tetras, in this community tank...

I have hesitated on the hatchets, as this is an open topped tank, but there are so many terrestrial plants above this particular tank, that this tank is highly shaded... I'm guessing the fish "could" hit a hole in the plants, but with so much foliage above the tank, the plant leaves would act as a cover??? and the hatchets would be comfortable here... I love the look of the marble hatchets, but with the tank so heavily shaded, the silver ones would be much more visible... thoughts???

I grew up with hatchets, as in a fishkeeping family, they were a favourite. If you have quick fish in the tank, or Cichlids, you're wasting your money and their lives by going open topped. Leaping is their mechanism to escape sudden movement from below.

currently the angel, and silver dollar combo, are pretty "chill" but I realize they are holding back the development of the tetra side of this tank, but they will be moved soon, and in general, this is a very relaxed tank... and I honestly look at the foliage as a natural cover... along the back, are 6 pretty big peace lilies, plus the 10-12 inches thick of pothos vines over the top...

@Magnum Man What about using some plastic craft grid? I did this to cover the back of my tank for one day when I can get some hatches. I bet you could cut circular or square holes for your emergent pots.
