Hi Guys,

I am planning to get a tropical tank soon, the trouble is that we plan to move house in the not too distant future too. This might be in around six months time. I was wondering whether I should wait until I have moved house before I get my tank as I may possibly have more space.

How much hassle is it moving an established tank? Whats usual the procedure?

Thanks

How far are you moving?

My mother moved a few blocks away and what she did was wait until the power and water was on in the new apartment and took about 70% of water out or enough till it was light enough to move. NEVER try to move a full tank its way too heavy and you could drop it. You want to keep the filter wet so put the filter in a bucket or something with some tank water. Then drive your aquarium over to your new home then replace the water with temperture matched and treated water.
In a few years I'll be moving to another country i'll be mailing mine  not looking forward to that. so if you are moving further away you will need a styrofoam cooler, some of those bags you bring fish home from the pet store, newspaper, and duct tape. Put the fish in pet store bags with just enough water to cover them. Fill the rest of the bag with air and tie tightly. place the bags in the cooler and secure the bags with newspaper so they do not roll and slide around the cooler. Replace lid and secure with duct tape. They can survive for 2 weeks in the cooler making sure they aren't exposed to any extreme heat or cold.
don't put food in the bags because this will just pollute the water.
You will need to make sure your bacteria isn't destroyed during the move or at least cycled tank is waiting for them at your new home. Make sure you treat them like you were bring new fish home from the store.
Good Luck
