We have 2 tanks. One for goldfish (had it about a year) and a freshwater had since April.
Last night we did a water change for the goldies, and I took out a few old plants (live) because the goldies end up snacking on them
so I replace their snacks from time to time. I added a few of those nutrient pellets for live plants under the gravel, new plants AND we moved the tank up a few inches, which seems to have brought it just close enough to the window (though at an angle) that it caused algae growth. (this is my guess) I noticed this evening green moldy looking (not slimy) algae patches on their tank ornaments, not anywhere else. Anyway, aside from eating everything else in the tank (I even have one goldy that eats poop, ewww) they do not eat the algae off the decorations. However my mollies in the other tank would love it! They are always picking at their decoration though they don't seem to have any real growth in there.
Is it ok to take the decorations from the goldfish tank and put in in the freshwater tank for the mollies ot eat? Maybe leave it for a few days for the mollies to snack on, plus we have 2 emrald catfish in with the mollies. I kind of feel bad they are always pecking at stuff in their tank but there's really no growth for them! Will that cause an contamination of algae in the molly tank? They also have live plants but are completely out of the sunlight. Is it not a good idea to move something from one tank to another like that?
Also we will be moving the goldies back a few inches so they are back to being in no sunlight to see if that is the cause. Since their new position did not put them in direct sunlight, ( they are on the side where a little afternoon light might barely get in through the side of the tank but really there's not light shining right into the tank), we never thought it was cause any growth. But the growth wasn't there last night, as we would have seen it while doing the water change.
Thanks.
