I'll be moving out of my dorm soon into an apartment. I need some advice as to how to move the fish... heres what i have:

5 Tiger Barbs
2 African Dwarf Frogs
2 Peacock Eels
2 Algae Eaters
? Ghost Shrimp (whatever hasnt been eaten...)

30 gallon tank

I also have a gravel substate that i want to swap for a sandy one to make life easier on my eels.

So how do you suggest I do it?

Oh and one more thing, what else can i put in there? It seems like I could put more, but I'm not positive...

For the critters: bag them (1/3 water, 2/3 air I *think* is the correct ratio but please check on this) and place all the bags in a box or a cooler and surround them with an insulating packing material. This will help keep the temperature stable.

Get a large rubbermaid tub with a lid, toss in your substrate and filter media with enough water from the tank for everything to stay wet. This will help keep your biological filter alive. When you get to the new home, scoop a portion the old substrate into a clean unused nylon stocking to place in a corner of the tank (for about a week) until your new substrate has had a chance to colonize.

Keep a close eye on the rebuilt tank for a few days, doing regular water parameter checks (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates...etc) to make sure that your tank doesn't go through a mini cycle.

I would:

Turn off all electrical equipment - light, filter, heater etc.

Eliminate 50% of the water. Put all filter media into a bucket with existing water. Cover if possible (for the trip).

Put all fish into other container(s) complete with tank water water. Put ALL gravel (if possible) into a bucket(s) with some existing tank water.

Dismantle tank, move, set up tank.

Put all decorations, gravel, filter, existing tank water etc back in tank at new location. Fill with extra water etc. Put in fish.

As far as changing the substrate is concerned - I personally would do that at a later date. This is so you can establish the tank at the new location with the biological filter (in case you go through a mini cycle).
