hi
in the near future i will be purchasing a used tank (20gl) with fish in it and a bunch of stuff, all included
but not sure how to move the tank is it small enough to move when only part of the water removed or do i have to empty the whole tank for the move
any info and all info would be apreciated
thanks

well i learnt this from pratical fishkeeping.
you should Never move a filled aquarium, go to youn LFS and ask/purchase some of the bages they use to transport fish and also some polistirine boxes so the ish maintain there tempreture, fill the bags with one thire water 2 thirs air (if you can use pure oxygen) and add only 1 big or a few small for to a bag. by the time all the fish are packed some of the water should be gone.
Now the filter, take the media out of the filter and add to bags of tank water with some food (to keep as many alive as posable) use the same method are the fish for transportaton but i would do it in two bags which means if something goes wrong not all the bacteria will die making you have to cycle the tank.
once every thing livving has been baged up (plants just add a small amound of water to a sealable bucket and they will last a-while), empty all the water and get rid of it or transport it using sealable buckets (its easyer to just lose it, and refill back at home).
remove asmuch of the gravel asposable (dont spend more than 10 mins on the next few bits), remove all decorations and transport it instantly

at home set the tank up by adding the gravel again, adding the decorations and refilling the tank (not to full as the fish water will add some more), dechlorinate the water and let it heat up with using a heater, add the filter and media ASAP to avoid losing anymore bacteria, add the fish by letting them sit in there bags in the water for about 20mins, every 5 mins add a small amount of tank water to get them used to your water qualitys.

this should be everything, there are many ways of transporting fish and a filter but this is just my way, im sure you will get many other ways and chose the one that is best for you and the fish (dont forget the filter)

shang hi :good:

Empty it.

I can carry my 10g with 6kg gravel and a couple of litres of water in just about, i'm only 14 but 20g = like 70-90l so that's 70-90kg just with water.

Thanks guys
where i'm picking up the tank is about 10 min car ride
hopefully all will go well
i was also wondering if i want to take my 5 gl tank and put my fish in the new 20gl one can i use the 5gl tank water or do i just take the fish out and tranfert them(might be a little hard of a change?) into the 20gl. what would be the best way to go ?
i presently have a pleco, apple snail, a guppy in my 5 gl
and in the 20 gl tank i'm getting there is 2 pleco & small shark. i would rather not get his pleco since i have one but i don't want to kill them what can i do with them, would a pet store take them ?
thanks again

plecos are going to to way to big for your 20g, with my 50ish gall i cant have one, as they grow up to 30cm.
your LFS should accept a free fish (i mean its something they can sell and it cost them NOTHING)
addish your current fish is like having a new one, if you used the tecnique i said then float the bag they are in in the watter for 20 mins after that open it and roll the sides down so it will float, every 5 mins or so add asmall amount of the water in the tank (do about 50ml a time and keep doing this for atlease an hour).
you can use the water from the 5gall but i see no point, it holds like 0.000001% of the filter bacteria in it.

he didnt say what plec it was ;)

if you are getting everything including the filter then run the filter and the filter from your 5g and add all the fish you currently have instantly. I would use the water from the 5g tank so it wont be such a shock to the fish.

just make sure the filters stay in water and not for too long. As soon as you get back turn the 20gal filter on (if you get it, in some old tank water obviously)

the pleco is a common on about 1''
i think i will try the pet store is they will take the 2 bigger ones
thanks for all the info guys
