hello, this summer i have to move my 125 gal. SW tank. It is being moved an hour and a half away so it's quite a journey. I've started reading about the process and it sounds like a lot of work. I have 5 fish and a few corals. and a lot of snails and crabs. I am looking for any useful information, whether it's things to avoid or things i MUST do any input is gladly appreciated.

Firstly welcome to the forum :hi:

Second, Good luck!! I moved my 30g marine tank just 10 minutes up the road and that was stressful enough :)

How much liverock do you have in the tank?

The easiest way to do it (if you can) is to get a large container or fish tank (say around 20-30g depending on the size of your fish and corals) set it up at the new place before you move the tank and then transfer all your corals and fish into there first (dont forget to aclimitise them as effectively it will be a new tank). That way your not in such a rush to get everything back into the tank again when you come to move it.

Once you have all the fish and corals out of the way you will need:
  • Containers for putting the water in. Take as much as you can and if you cant take it all make sure you have some more made up at the other end.
  • Buckets/containers/polyboxes for the liverock - For a longer journey I would try to have them submersed in containers of water, this gives you more time when moving the tank and setting it up again. If keeping them submersed isnt possible soak some towels or newspaper in the salt water from your tank and cover the LR with them.
  • lots of towels :)
  • Blankets or similar to pad and protect the tank while its in transit.

Once you have your fish out and set up in their temporary home drain out all the water from the big tank into containers.
Put all your LR into containers.
Dismantle the tank.

When you get to setting it up put the water back in (dont forget to make sure tank is level, sounds stupid but in the stress of moving its easy to forget to do this :) ). Put the rock and equipment back in and then sit back and relax :)

Once you have got your rock scaped how you want it move all the fish and corals back into the main tank (dont forget to acclimitise them again).

That is how I would do it. If you have to move all the fish and corals at the same time it will be over and done with quicker but imo will be more work to do (and more stressful).
