Next couple of days going to change my back ground poster so need to move my aquarium forward. I need to empty it enought to move it. It's a 50g corner tank with about 40 kg of rock. I've got a tub that can take about 120l or more of water. Last time I empty the tank and took the fish out like this I lost 2 of them.

So is there a better way of doing it?

I need to cling on to this thread. I am facing a similiar problem with my new tank, as I placed it in a bad place in the house.
Hope you get some good advice, as Ill be sucking it up too

I am also kind of contemplating that same method though.

Have not had the experience of moving fish around like this, but wondering a few things that may or may not matter..

How much water did you save from the tank they were already in? Since when you move them to a new tank it's sort of like doing a big water change.
How long did it take you? Did you have an airstone in the bucket and cover it with a towel to reduce stress?

Imagine neither of those would cause a fish to die, but I really don't know..it's all I can think of :c

When I moved all my fish from one tank to another I put them in a black bucket with a small filter running and some rock to hide under. Made sure they had peace and quiet away from our kids in a very low lit room. None died.

Oh. I used water from the tank they were being moved from to fill the bucket :)

over half the water will be put back in the tank. also I but some rocks in to provide some kind of temp line of sight barrier and I try to be as fast as I can.

I moved house ( only 2 minute drive) but I emptied my fish into bags in buckets for the move. My theory being as you buy your fish from the shop hey come in bags so it wouldn't matter too much. As they were only out of the tank for 45 minutes I wasn't too worried about filtration or heating. As for filling it back up, I kept 70 out of 100 litres and just acted like it was a water change. Hope this helps ?
