Mouth Rot Emergency!

Oh, by the way, more bad news - two fish down after yesterday (the one with the severe signs of mouth rot and another one of the old neons - without too many disturbing signs). The other neon with mouth rot in severe trouble today. Photos on http://s580.photobucket.com/albums/ss249/Monsk12/

Platies and catfish still seem fine. Which is my shimmer of hope at the moment.

Cheers Tina, yes, it was the Nutrafin test, so no ammonia. Here's some good news. Although now I am really freaked out about what's going on with my fish.

Just heard it from my LFS that my water is spot on. So that's a relief. In that I have done nothing major wrong and that I am alsao capable of doing water checks. There's hope for me yet. After much deliberating over corpses, fish videos, photos and listening to their entire medical and life history, we are now advised to try omnipur, since he reckons the underlying cause of all this could be parasitic. He reckons after 50% water change and carbon in filter last night, I am ready to go, so I am rolling my sleeves up and we're starting all over again. Better luck this time. He also gave me some of his antibiotic fish food, so ideally we have it all covered. Platies and catfish still happy as Larry, so that's good.

I shall keep you informed - keep your fingers crossed for me and the neons!

Red gills can be flukes if water quality is good.
Signs of skin and gill flukes are.

Pale gills with excess slime, or red and inflamed gills.
opaque body with excess slime.
Flicking and rubbing.
Laboured breathing or gasping at surface of tank.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Weightloss sometimes.
Sores on body of fish.
Erratic swimming, or darting.

Yes, that sounds pretty much like my neons. This is what the LFS guy recommended. She should know, he's been on loads of fish disease courses. We had a good 20 minute chat going through all my assorted evidence. No more losses in 48 hours. Omnipur made the water nice and fluorescent green. You would think something with this colour has to work!

One of the neons has got some sores on his skin by now, so I hope the medication does the trick and clears it up. Their behaviour is a lot calmer and less erratic. They seem to have a good appetite, which is not surprising cause they are on a strict diet now. LFS guy says it's a bit of a funny issue, but he swears by reducing food for fish with parasites, bacterial disease etc. as all you end up doing is feeding the parasites indirectly. So here we go, medication and hopefully starving the parasites out. They do get their antibacterial feed though. Fingers crossed!

Cheers for all your help, I really hope that we get the thing under control, as I don't want to lose all my neons to this. Four are left - one of which is a very old chap but seems least affected. I think he's just really suffering from old age by now! :)

Glad you are on the right track.
Good Luck.

No more deaths so far and fish seem to get better day by day, fingers crossed. What a relief! :good:

That's good news then.
