I was watching our cichlids tonight and noticed that the female aristochromise red top looked a little different. Her mouth looked a little strange, so my first thought was eggs. I snapped a quick picture, and will try to get better ones, but can anyone confirm anything based on the picture below? Will she not eat if she is carrying eggs? Thanks.

SHE BE A HOLDIN' EGGS MATE!!!
congrats papa!!
she wont eat while holding eggs BUT if this is her first spawning dont be surprised if one day you see
she's eating again and her jaw isnt so full looking. sometimes the first ones dont go all the way.
such is life ehhh
If you have a spare tank you can put her in thats cycled and seasoned you might be able to keep her fry.
GOOD LUCK!!! :D

my yellow lab just got done holding.she held about 2 weeks give or take.i noticed they suck a few down once and a while.

Aww congrats. Hope she gets all the way to spitting them. I have 3 socolfi fry from one of my girls first spawning and never moved them out of the main tank. doing real well too they are.
Hugs,
P.

Thanks for the replies! It's very exciting that she's with child, but now I've gotta figure out what to do...

I have a spare 6g Eclipse tank that I can put her in, but I don't want her to stay in there for long because of how small the tank is. So how long do they hold them in their mouths before they spit? If she spit them out while I was at work, would she eat them?

Well, this is gonna sound crazy, but when I was feeding this morning (she didn't eat btw), I noticed one of my smaller hap mooriis not eating, and she has the same "full of eggs" look to her mouth, so I think I've got two fish with eggs in their mouths! Must be something in the water... :)

that will work.just take water from your main tank and put it in the 6.then refill ur main tank.it will not really matter the size as long as it works for them.u must feed the fry liquifry available at most fs.she will not eat them right away but its better to take her out when u see the fry in the water just in case
