I have a white fluffy looking mould? growing on my bogwood and also a very short brown tufted algae? . I need to get rid of them both as my flying foxes and bristlenoses all graze on the wood and they wont touch the areas affected. I dont want them eating it and getting ill. :(

What is the best method of cleaning it off? I have tried just scrubbing the wood with old tank water but it just comes back. Every time I have to do this I destroy the look of the tank and the java moss comes off so a magic 'works first time' answer is what i am really after!

Would scrubbing the wood in a weak solution of bleach harm anything??

Cava :fish:

yes you'll kill your fish, the bleach will seep into the wood like a sponge and come out again as soon as you put it in the tank.

BLEACH AND FISH DONT MIX

sorry to sound a bit harsh but don't ever use ANY cleaning agents for anything fish related. Warm Water and scrubbing i'm afraid.

there may well be a safe treatment from the LFS but it's definately not bleach

hope it's not too late

I've read a couple of posts on this before but not sure what the outcome was :/ Unfortunate really, because when I looked in my tank yesterday, I had the same thing

Bother. Thought that might be the case. I haven't used anything yet as going to do a water change in the next couple of days so needed info before then.

I have scrubbed the wood before loads of times but it just comes back - wot more can I do?? Taking the wood out is so disruptive. :(

-_-

I have the same prob too. Mould or something growing on the wood, and taking it out will rip the plants apart, so i choose to just leave it there. Didnt think it would cause the fish any probs? hope im not wrong.

Found the post Here

Not quite an answer, but it seems like it is harmless for fish, so that's good enough for me!

Found This one too

What about using a weak bleach solution? 1 part bleach to 19 parts water. Many people use it to disinfect their tanks and to kill snails that might have come with their plants. (just a quick dip, then into de-clorinated water)

Will this work? I was thinking of a really weak solution just to get the mouldy stuff and then to rinse REALLY well. I had heard that household bleach is used to clean up a second hand tank that has been empty for some time and then just rinsed out. :/

I need a clear yes or no on the bleach solution front please. :flowers:

I would think that amonia would kill it, then you could test for it. Afterwards I would boil it and then soak it in fresh water for several days, maybe longer, changing the water daily. You could then test the water it is soaking in for amonia until you are sure it is safe.

I wouldn't reccomend doig this until others who are more knowledgable than I have a chance to comment, but I think that in theory this should work.

How about using a chlorine based bleach, then just use loads of dechlorinator when soaking? :dunno:
