Whats the most agressive african cichlid that would be suitable for a 85 gallon? Im asking because my friend next week is redoing his 85, changing it from gravel to sand, the sand I have because he liked it, and a lot of other things. And can clown loaches live with this species? Scientfic and common name please.

It would be really cool to get just 1 HUGE aggressive african cichlid for your 85 gallon tank.

I suggest one of the following:

1 Jaguar (or Managua) cichlid -- Parachromis managuensis

OR

1 Black Nasty (or 'Odo') cichlid -- Nandopsis haitiensis

OR

1 Mota (or Motagua) cichlid-- Parachromis motaguensis

Do not keep any of these cichlids together or with any other fish (including loaches).

These fish will tear anything apart which makes them a very exciting and interesting fish when you give them a nice big tank (75 gallon is minimum) and keep them alone or else they will destroy what else is in the tank.

I have kept a Black Nasty cichlid in a 100 gallon tank a few years ago and they are great fish! I gave him to a friend who had a 250 gallon tank and wanted a Black Nasty so I figured that with more my guy would be happier so I let him have mine and I got 2 Oscars for my 100 gallon tank.

Thanks. Thats what I was looking for but not loach safe, means none of them.

Clown loaches don't do well in as high a Ph as what african cichlids prefer.

All I can suggest with clown loaches are maybe 4 Bolivian Rams, 30 Tetras, 10 Ottos and call it a day.

An aggressive african won't be able to live with anything (hence 'aggressive')

however, most Mbuna species do well with Synodontis catfish
I can't recommend them with loaches however because like a ph of 7.0 and Africans like a Ph above 8.0

Unfortunately Rams are neither African nor aggressive but for clown loaches they would provide a nice centerpiece to a community tank.

How many loaches do you have?
