Went to Maidenhead aquatics today to pick some plants up for my new aquarium. While I was there, I noticed a big bucket full of moss type stuff, and I noticed they had it on some driftwood in a few of their tanks.

After speaking to one of the guys there, he didn't know what it actually was, but it was only £1 for a handful, so I bought some

At the moment, I've attached it to some driftwood using a hair net.

Questions are :

1) Can anyone ID it?
2) Will it actually grow onto the driftwood, or will it always need the hair net to keep it on the wood?

Looks to be Java moss, pretty easy to grow and yes it will attach to driftwood, rocks or any other thing it wants to.

can you get a pic of it in the tank, and just a pic of one of the leaves? This will help, it is hard to tell out of the water, as most mosses look the same!

You could also try aquamoss for ID. They have the leaves under a microscope to pick up the detail that your camera may not be able to. What ever moss you ave it is a great bargain at £1!

It's Java Moss. Something that I can't grow in my CO'2d main tank with everything added- but goes nuts in my spare tank in the garage with little light, no ferts etc.

No- it will attach naturally, but give it time. It is a really beautiful moss- very green & abundant, has covered my bog wood, but has taken over a year to do so- if it had been in my main tank- no doubt I would has whipped it out as 'not growing quickly enough'. By leaving it for a year- it has been able to do it's own thing.

You got a bargain!!

Looks like I certainly did get a bargain. The part in the picture is only half of what I got for £1. I've attavhed some to a piece of driftwood, and I'll be trying some on slate to try and get a bit of a carpet effect in part of the tank.

This will still leave me with quite a bit left. What's the best way to store the spare stuff - wrap it up in a hair net and just leave it hanging in the water?

Just watch the hairnet!!!

Remember you now have a net in your fish tank. What do you use to catch fish?

I caught and lost a molly to a slightly loose hairnet.

Personally i find green cotton thread better.

EDIT: - its definitly Java moss!
