We might be going to the shop tomorrow that sells them. I'm not after tham for the benefits they bring, I was wondering whether its just a way of selling Java moss. I can't get it anywhere else.

They are the green algae(?) Cladophora aegagropila.I have 2 and they seem to soak up dirt like a sponge. If you don't turn them on a regular basis they will flatten out.

You can ring them out like a sponge and rinse them if they get dirty, or get some shrimp to keep them groomed..

I have one in my 10G and the shrimp do a fine job keeping it clean..

:)

Make sure to roll it like mellowserra said, they will not stay round otherwise. :)

to answer your question moss balls are not made from java moss, they are more of a fluffy soft moss rather than course stringy java moss

try greenline aquatics, theyre great.

greenline

i was nervous of using them at first as i like to see what i'm getting before i buy but when i recieved the parcel all the contents were perfect. nothing dead and much bigger plants than you get for the same price in the LFS.

well worth giving them a go.

i was gonna try greenline aquatics but my mam says its a waste of moiney lol when i can justurn to the LFS

None of the lfs or lps around here have java moss. I do have 2 moss balls though. They're pretty cool looking. I don't know that they really are beneficial, other than being a plant, but they do add interest. I got mine from a fellow off ebay. As a matter of fact, I've gotten most of my plants from him. (Very good plants and price.)
