I had a freak white spot breakout in my tank last Friday and after treating with parazoyne for three days with no result I moved my mormyrid into a small tank on his own and started treating my main tank with protozin.

I have raised the temperature in the mormyrid's tank to try and kill off the white spot (he doesn't have any spots, but was flicking and quite stressed).

The temp is currently at 29 degrees and has been for most of today. Will this method work or will I need to add a copper free treatment also? How long will he be able to within this temperature. He seems fine at the moment, but it's not ideal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would go with the temp for now if he has no spots, not familar with this breed at all.
Is there plenty of aeration if so raise it to 30.

Thank you for replying so quickly.

There is plenty of aeration, so I'll raise the temp. Can most tropical fish tolerate 30 degrees for a few days?

He doesn't have spots, but was flicking badly in the tank, but I haven't seem him flick since I put him in his own tank and he was still feeding yesterday.

Best thing to do is go to the right part of the forum for the fish as I don't know the fish at all.
Most fish can tolerate high temps as long as there plenty of aeration.

I've never heard of that fish . Try searching 'google' for that fishes profile.

Good Luck!!

His common name is "Freshwater Dolphin".

I have his temperature up to 32 degrees now and he seems fine. He snatched food out of my hand as usual. Can the white spot survive at this temperature?

...

Most strains of white spot don't survive at that tempereature, but there are strains that do.

Purely raising temeperature is not a good idea with white spot. It increases the speed of the life cycle, so by just raising the temperature you run the risk of merely increasing the rate at which the parasite takes hold.

In the pinned topic on dealing with ich is a link to the Skeptical Aquarist's page on Ich. It is very good reading and the best site I have found out there for information on the parasite.

I understand that raising the temperature speeds up the life cycle, but I'm hoping if I raise it high enough it shall completely eliminate the white spot. I can't use normal meds as it's a mormyrid and I did try using a herbal remedy called "Parazoyne" but it wasn't helping. I shall check the Skeptical Aquarist's page but it's hard to find a remedy when treating fish such as mormyrids as there's a lot of conflicting information and I keep going round in circles searching for an answer. I have Mxyazin ready to add as I was told that could help with mormyrids, but then the instructions keep referring to marine fish with white spot and not tropical.

This white spot shouls dispere at 32c 32c is a high temp...

i always treat whitespot by increasing temperature, (around 83f to 85f). keep it there for about 7 days, at this temp the ich cycle is around 4 days and they die off during the free swimming stage. your mormyrid has no scales and will not take the addition of meds too happily, (he may die) i have heard that there are strains of whitespot that can tolerate higher temps but have never come across any

good luck

Thank you everyone.

He's been at that temperature for 2 days now so I'll keep the temp high for 7 days. At the moment he seems fine, just a little skittish.

The reason I bought Myxazin is because on the back of the Protozin med it says:

"CAUTION: Do not use when Elephantnose fish, freshwater rays and related species are present. In these instances use MYXAZIN."

...but you think myxazin wouldn't help at all just incase things turn bad.

Fish can get bacterial infections on top of parasites, but it won't cure the parasites.
