Hi,

I've been considering adding to my stocking of my tank for a while and am looking at adding another pair of apistogrammas to my tank. I'm looking at one of the smaller species like hongsloi, macmasteri, baensch and trifasciatum Guapore Red or cacs. I am looking at adding a few small branches to try and create another territory for the new pair. The current pair have spawned in two locations of the tank but are mostly at one side, one inside the wood and one inside a cave made of a pile of pebbles siliconed together. The tank is a 36" approx i.e. 180litres and well planted (see sig).

Do you think I will run into any problems? Have any of you kept more than one species in the same tank? I would like to spawn them but am also looking at buying a 2ft tank as a breeding setup.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!!

I have Trifasciata and Baenschi in one tank, no real problems, plenty of caves, wood, plants and hiding places, the beanschi are pretty aggressive but nothing really serious, mine get along fine, they are the ony fish in the tank, will be adding pencils next year when i can find some?

I would say if you want them to breed succesfully go with a breeding setup, to many fry eaters in your main tank, hence me getting pencils:)

Don't I know it!!!! The tetras hoover up the pencils eggs as they are being laid!!!!!!

Cheers for the reply. I think I will only setup the breeding tank when I have plenty of time to raise the fry. I haven't any joy getting the eggs to hatch thus far though.

I've only ever kept Agassizi but its my (very limited) understanding that different Apistogramma species can be kept together as long as they are in a different subcomplex. For example the Agassizi complex includes Apistogramma bitaeniata and Apistogramma elizabethae and the Cacatuoides complex includes Apistogramma juruensis, which in theory means you'll have more success trying to keep jurensis with bitaeniata than Bitaeniata with elizabethae. I think the idea is that the physical differences between the complexes mean the fish will not recognise each other as competition. I've not been able to find a breakdown of subcomplexes but there should be something on the internet if you have a scout through google.

Sorry if thats a round about way of explaining things; my terminology might not be correct and I'm only spouting information from memory, but I hope thats of some use.

Thanks, I think I read something similar in my apistos book. I will have a look when I get home as I have been working over christmas..... Just hope my tank sitter has been looking after my tank properly.
