Belle is still doing great in her hospital jar. I have noticed today, two more of the girls have odd looking mouths. I think I am catching it in the early stages....their mouths are swollen, but now falling apart yet.

I pulled one into a hospital jar this morning and then noticed the red one now.

Should I treat the whole tank or pull the other 4 girls out into seperate jars? The disease is obviously in the main tank so I am thinking keeping the girls in there and medicate?

Help!!

I went and bought more M I and II....I put the red girl back into the main tank. I am keeping the blue, Sparkalina, in a hospital jar because she is not acting well.

I took the carbon out of the filter and removed the heater. I medicated the main tank (goodbye biological filter, sniff) plus added aquarium salt.

I hope Sparkalina can survive this. About a year ago, she was my only survivor in a giant bout of columnaris....I know she is strong after that experience!

If more fish are getting mouth fungus columnaris yes you done the right thing by adding the meds to the main tank, do some water changes but add the med back to the water removed, increase aeration, and turn temp down so the bacteria dosn't multiply as fast, good luck.

Just wanted to give an update....so far everyone is doing well. My first fish to get mouth rot, Belle, is going through an ugly stage. She looks like her head and mouth are molting. But, she is eating and energetic and happy to be alive.

The main tank seems to be okay, no new cases of flex. The water got really cloudy from the meds but otherwise the girls are good. With only 3 in there and losing the queen fish so to speak to a hospital tank...there have been some squabbles. No fighting, just a lot of chasing.

Sparkalina still has a little fuzz on her body near one side fin. She is eating and energetic and I think she is over the worst. She was the ruler of the tank and I think she is somewhat bored in her hospital tank.

Thanks again for all of the help. I feel incredibly lucky not to lose any fish to this bad bout of flex/mouth rot.

Is belle in isolation as i would switch to tetracycline its a better med.
But the med will wipe the bacteria colony out in your hospital filter.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

I do have Belle in a 1 gal hospital jar, since she is a Betta I did not set up a hospital tank. I could switch meds. She has 3 days left on the M I and II. She is totally healthy. I am trying to decide if I should switch things around and put her into a 1 gal tank in my daughter's room (moving her male out and putting him in a split 2.5 gal tank). I am still trying to decide on this. I just don't want the girls to pick on her because her mouth looks funny. It is healing but I think scar tissue may keep it oddly shaped.

Sparkalina is also in a 1 gal...she is acting normal but still has a little fuzz on her body that will not go away. Maybe she would be a better candidate for the Tetracycline?

I think with belle mouth being that bad i would switch to tetracycline, the other one if he fungus is not going on the head i would also get her on to tetracycline, bless them and good luck.
