Hiya all

update on platy fry.... I have 2 females and a male in a 38Lt starter kit tank (kids!) anyway the tank has been up and running for about 5 weeks and the fish have been in there for nearly 3 weeks. Last week one of the females gave birth, I managed to save 3 very healthy and active fry, found several bodies and a few heads! I currently have the 3 fry in a plastic breeding unit but have just brought a net because they look kinder! This morning though I lifted the lid and found two more newborn and spotted 2 dead bodies and possibly a third which looks like it is dying. The thing is the last lot are now 8 days old, was my female holding on to them? They definately havent come from the other female, she is and has always been very slim and her and the male are as thick as theives where as my other female has been quite a loner since I got her (obviously pregnancy induced). I have read a lot of info since joining this site on platys but didnt realise they could do this, thought I wouldnt have to worry for another 4 weeks. Think I may attempt an all female environment eventually if I give the male back to the LFS and off load the fry for the next 6 months. Has anyone else done this, do all females get on? ( they dont in the human world!)

anyway thanks for reading

Heads are probably aborted fry. It's normal. I wouldn't worry too much.

Most LFS won't take fry when they are small. They have to get to about 1" in size before they will be taken. The LFS doesn't want fish that they have to raise that may not survive. All females are best to keep from having more fry. They get along fine, unlike humans. :)
