so many of my fish have died! i have had some advice but am so confused. I didn't cycle my tank and put fish in 1 week after setting up, i didn't treat the water and 3 weeks later my fish were dropping dead! and still are! although i thought a fish was dead last night as it was lying on the bottom, tried to scoop it out with my net and it swam off lol. Anyway enough with my uselesness, what i want to know is if i ahve to de-chlorinate the water changes i do now? as i have been told to do a 40% water change and when can i buy new fish? my tank looks crappy. Oh and one more thing what do i have to buy? i don't have a de-chlorinate thingy yet as i don't know what to ask for!! has anyone got msn that i can chat to? forums can take ages for replies and im stressing!

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Hello, You will need a "Dechlorinator" to use water in your fish tanks. If you dont, the fish will be killed and the beneficial bacteria will also die creating a very hostile enviornment for fish to live in.

Have you done some reading on "Nitrogen cycle"? Look up some sticky posts at the top of this section.

As for what dechlorinator you need: Plenty of options from Fish stores to Tesco. Tesco/Asds etc. do Tetra Aquasafe but you can get this from fish stores as well. Other commonly used dechlorinators are: API Stresscoat, Seachem Prime.

Read up on the nitrogen cycle and you will know why the fish are diying. You will also need to get hold of test kits. Specially: Ammonia, NitrITE (NO2) and NitrATE (NO3). Only when Ammonia and NitrITE (NO2) in your tank are zero is when you can get fish and only then will the tank really be considered slightly safe for keeping fish alive.
