I have a 10G tank sitting unused and I plan on setting it up soon. I was going to paint the back black and use moonsand for the substrate for effect. I was thinking about using plants that do not have to be rooted in the substrate such as java fern, java moss, anubias, maybe a marimo ball or two. This will be a low light-low tech tank.

What other plants could I use that would fit this concept?

Can a soil substate {say Eco-Complete} be placed under the sand for rooted plants if I decide to go that direction?

Don't know about the moonsand idea, but using soil is difficult. You should read up on it before you go and try and use it.
