I don't think my moneywort is doing so well. It isn't as green/healthy looking as it was a couple of weeks ago. The leaves are facing down still and the plant doesn't seem to have grown much. It also has brown parts on it, due to possible diatoms?

What am I doing wrong? (You can look at my sig for a link to more info on the tank)

Thanks, Ash.

if the plants were cuttings when you bought them they will require time to develop a root system. During this stage they will be under a lot of stress. A bit of iron fertiliser and planty of light will help them grow.

There were some roots when I bought them but after a couple of weeks, they grew a lot of roots. But still seem to be going slowly downhill...
I currently use Flourish. Is that helping any?'
And my lighting is 108W T-5 in a 55 gallon, am I leaving them on for too long? Currently do 10 hours of light.

My moneywort looked just like that when it was shipped to me. New growth looks "normal". Old growth mainly remains with the leaves matted down. Once moneywort starts taking off, you won't really have to worry about the old growth looking sickly (grows somewhat quickly).

6-10 hours is pretty good. Wouldn't do anymore.. maybe cut it down to 8 hours. Just play with it.

I'd also recommend the use of flourish excel in that setup if you aren't going to be using CO2 of any kind. Probably also get your hands on some dry ferts. I see you're in the USA.. so you can grab 'em from here: http://aquariumfertilizer.com/

I've looked into dry ferts but I don't know what to buy or how much of it

No CO2 and twice a week, a little less than a full cap. I would try pressurized CO2 but the fire extinguisher experiment seems a little too dangerous for me

CO2 is your issue then, 2wpg of T5 on a 55gallon is a lot,

Fire extinghuisher is fine, i se one up feeling like you, i sretched out my arms when 'firing' it and a little hiss came out

very simple and safe, just as long as you leave the saftey pin in!

Dry ferts you need are:

Potassium Nitrate - 40g to 500ml of water and adding 10ml per 100L of water would give you a value of 5ppm.
Potassium Phosphate - 15g to 500ml of water and adding 5ml per 100L of water would give you a value of 1ppm.
Trace mix - 15g to 250ml of water will give you about the same concentration as the flourish

Hmm, well I will look into pressurized CO2. Is there any other way besides making one yourself? Just wondering.

So those three are all I need? (once the flourish bottle runs out and I get more plants)
And is the trace mix the CSM+B?

Will getting the CO2, EI ferts, and more plants get rid of algae?
And, if I end up with that setup, can I grow pretty much anything? I just want to know what lighting range to stay in so I don't end up with dead plants.

Thanks

there are 'ready made' pressurized kits out, but they cost a lot, and they usually come with 500g bottles which last a few weeks, so if you can get an adapter, which takes reffilables (like Fire extinghuishers, welding bottles etc0 then that would be better. I know D&D and JBL make an adapter for their systems.

DIY CO2 is no good for a 55g.

Will getting the CO2, EI ferts, and more plants get rid of algae?

Maybe, depending on the type of algae, take a look in my sig for everything you need to know about algae :)

I did think about DIY CO2 but I've read it would be really unstable? for such a big tank. I am going to try it on my 20g though. I will ask my father to help me with the pressurized bottle. So I just need an empty fire extinguisher and would this be the rest? http://www.aquariumguys.com/co2-system-500.html

Well the algae I have grows on the glass. I think it is green spot algae? And it grows in this too

And I see brown patches, which I assume are diatoms. My otos seem to keep that mostly under control. I only see it on the moneywort.
Also, I bought a plant that hand these blueish green like hair stuff on it. Not sure which one that is. I saw my Angelfish try to eat it but then again my angelfish tried to eat the string which was holding my java fern in place
This is the plant
PA282795.jpg

But assuming so, pressurized CO2 and EI should get rid of it?

And on the moneywort subject, I have some floating hornwort and planted the moneywort by it. The moneywort seem to be 'leaning' to hide under the hornwort.

That is a dear piece of kit, not sure if they all are in USA, and that only works with the red sea CO2 bottles.

these are the adapters you can buy: http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...p;cPath=194_250

that allows JBL sets & D&D sets to run of a fire extinghuisher. I am not entirely sure they will work with the sustem above.

GSA grows with low phosphates, or sometimes high phosphates. so you have to find the sweet spot, but you will still probably get it anyway.

The other algae sounds like hair algae, see in my sig for details.

EI & CO2 wont get rid of it, they just prevent it, so you have to make sure that you remove as much as possible.
