Ive found a few sources on the net that list these fish as slightly brackish? Ive never had good luck with these fish either, do they in fact need some aquaium salt? If so it would explain the bad luck ive had with them in the past.

Mollies are, or at least benefit with marine salt, not aquarium salt.

Swordtails aren't brackish but can cope with slight brackish conditions.

They benefit from salt, but it's not mandatory. I've had a tank with swords and mollies for 2 years without salt and they were fine. This is an ongoing debate. Some people say they need them, some people say otherwise.

Naturally swords and platies are found in Mexico and they live in the upper rivers which have no salt content.

Mollies are found in the lower levels of the rivers, estuary's and even on the coastal area's.

However swords and mollies will tolerate low levels of salt.
