hi, i have 2 fish; black lyretail molly and a silver molly, and im thinking about getting a cichlid. will they do fine in a community 10gal tank? thanks

It really depends on what cichlid.

You could put a sp. of rams in there but, generally speaking *theotheragentm* is right, most wont get along.

NO I personally would not reccomend you getting a single cichlid save for a few select types. If the Mollies are at least 5 times the size of a potential angelfish's mouth than angelfish are an possibility. However angelfish will peck at and tormet smaller fish like guppies or small mollies. They will torment them until they die. Make sure the mollies are large. Also rams tend to be a more docile cichlid, but be aware of the type you are getting. Ask the store manager if neccessary. These cichlids tend to stay at the lower portion of the tank, and are fairly non agressive. While mollies tend to swim high or in the middle, so they rarely would run into each other. Also a ten gallon tank is not really suitable for any cichlid except for the smallest rams. Cichlids are more expensive and rarer than live bearers. If you want to invest in one, you need to invest in a bigger home and invest more of your time in cleaning the tank as often as possible.

Virtually all other cichlids that I haven't mentioned will kill your mollies in a matter of minutes. So avoid all others.

Your tank is too small for most cichlids, and yes you can out cichlids in there. Any thing of the dwarf cichlids like kribs and rams will be perfectly fine, also keyholes and angels, but that is about it. You could put on dwarf cichlid in there, but nothing else, just one and no tetras or anything becasue there wont be space.
