Hey guys

I bought a black molly a couple weeks ago and I guess she bred in my tank because now she's very much pregnant. She exhibits the following :

- White dot at the anal hole
- Enlarged anal hole
- Squared off belly

I tried putting her in the livebearer trap. The problem was she refused to settle down, and I was afraid she might "hurt" herself so I let her out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be that she has aborted dropping the fry?

I'm really afraid. Most of my fry died and now I only have a few..

Hello. If you have not read the pinned article, Breeding Traps and Nets, then I suggest you should as breeding traps and nets do cause some fish stress, especially in pregnant fish.

If she still looks pregnant and has the signs of pregnancy, then she has not aborted her fry yet.

But yes, nets do cause stress, and if you plan on putting her in one when she is ready to drop, I suggest you put her in at a time when she is not and will not be stressed during the birthing. Take her out if she is stressed. They are still good for isolation of and injured fish.

Perhaps you should take her out and transfer her to another tank with just her in it and some plants to provide hiding cover for the fry. That way is the least stressful and all you will need to do is take her out when she is done birthing because soon will eat her fry.

If you set up a fry tank, I suggest a 5-10 gallon with some little plants for them to hide in, an air stone filter or some light filter that will get the job done yet not suck up or kill any fry.

She dropped around an hour ago so I'll look for the fry tomarrow morning.

did you manage to save any of the fry or have they been gobbled up in ur tank
