I am not a big fan of mollies or platies, but somehow I couldn't resist these four faces in Petco today. :X They look like they are a cross between dalmation mollies and sunset platies. Cute little things. They are all four male, and they were the last ones in the tank, so I just took all four. One of them appears to be missing one of its side fins. I can see a bit left, so I don't think it is a birth defect, but none of them look like they have fin rot, so I would be inclined to say that it was lost in an accident of some sort. Do I need to do something different for this fish? I could seperate it from the others, though I don't know what to do for it, as I don't think the fin will grow back, will it?

Any way of posting a picture? That way it will be easier to differ between finrot or a birth defect. If he swims around normally and shows no sign of infection i wouldn't worry about it. But if he does take longer to get to food, maybe you'll have to isolate him and feed him seperately. Generally, fins do grow back.

I can't get a picture, as the one digital camera decided it no longer liked the computer, and disposible cameras aren't exactly high-quality. :/

Looking closer, I think I ended up with three males and one female. -_- :X

Also, will the zebra/leopard danios bother the mollties? (Whats the proper name for molly/platy crosses?)

The one missing a fin dosen't seem to act any differently then the others.

My zebra danios get along well with my mollies & platies. Although, I'm thinking about separating them to get my mollies into some salt. Good luck on your tank.

I wonder if these crosses need salt like mollies?

Also, I have been reading around, and some have said that a molly/platy cross would be impossible, or nearly impossible. So how did I come across such a rarity for 1.67 each at Petco, I wonder?

Come to find out, my dad has a new digital camera, so I will be trying to get that to work, as this is highly interesting... :good:

I don't believe it can be a molly/platy cross, as their not in the same family (like crossing dogs and cats). Swordtails and platies can breed (like collie and german shepherd). Were they labelled as mollies or platies?

Pictures! I couldn't get any pictures of the one's missing fin, as thier fins are pretty much transparent, so they don't really show up. This is my first time using the camera, so the pictures aren't that great. I will work on getting better pictures.

So what are these, then?

I can't remember exactly what they were labeled as, though I think they might have been called sunset mollies.

So are they just a color variation of a molly? :/

I also took a video of them, though I am still trying to figure out how to upload it.

Better pictures coming soon, hopefully!

Those are 100% Platy. Mollies and Platies cannot cross anyway, different genuses. They look like Calico Platies to me. :)
