Molly Pineconing

well this has been a hard start to my fish keeping career and now i have come home and my big black molly is pineconed and on its side, this fish has always been very funny since i got it but i thought it was just the way it was (obviously i was wrong) I dont have any medication the only thing i have been able to do is fill up an old plastic ice cream tub and float it on the water with her in. i dont think she has long left

Ammonia and Nitrates are fine etc...

Aw, poor thing. I think that if the fish is that sick and you don't have any meds (not that meds are likely to help once dropsy has reached that advanced stage) it's sometimes better to euthanise than let the fish suffer. If a fish has pineconed dramatically then, unfortunately, it means a lot of internal organ damage has already been done (usually beyond repair).

Would be good to keep some clove oil on hand so you can euthanize fish in case something occurs again in the future. Sorry about the Molly. . .

Had the same thing with my red platy Elmo (RIP) about 2 weeks ago. I was gutted coz he died just short of having him a year. Same with you, he'd always been a kind of sickly fish and was more recently displaying signs of an unknown illness and then I came home one day and he'd pineconed. I was lucky though I suppose because I decided to assess what to do in the morning and he saved me the trouble and died in the night.

I was also gutted one of my fish had got Dropsy (or so I assume) because they really are so well cared for. These things happen though I suppose.
