we have one 12 month old molly fish by herself in 18l tank with one plant and some tiny snails. noticed longish white poo coming out of her twice last week, then found her on bottom of tank Sat evening (very unusual for her, but still seemed alert and Sometimes swam up and around and on Sun morning she came up to surface to be fed, but didn't seem to be able to grab her food -fish flakes).
looks like sometimes she is scratching her belly on the gravel, and also scratching herself on the plant.
noticed for almost 24 hours she has clear poo coming out of her.
also noticed one tiny round white lump (size of pin head) above right gill. Looked all over can not see any other marks or spots.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

check your water parameters and make sure that they are were they should be,could be a bacterial or parasitic problem, you should try to do some more research on this site or try to google you problem.

Thanks for that! I did go to Local Aquarium and they checked a sample of water and said ok!?
Anyway, have been doing research and decided to do a daily 20% water change and have been adding more salt. Molly is now swimming around heaps more, but with tail end facing downwards most of the time, like she has lost some movement in it.

She still comes up looking for food when I go to look at her, and I tried her with the tiniest bit of flake food which she gulped down. I also have crushed up little bits of cooked pea (apparently good for constipation) - just in case this was the or one of the issues, but she spits it out after chewing for a while.

She is not her normal self, but has no visible marks, except one tiny little white spot like grain of salt above gill (could be ich? - hence the water changes and incresed salt)

I have held off medicating so far as don't know what prob is and don't want to kill her with stress of medication.

All I need to do now is work out if she has swim bladder problem, and wheher should medicate, or what.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't know much about mollys ,I would be a little apprehencive about using any type of medication even salt before I knew what I was dealing with. With that been said using salt to treat for ich you really need to warm the water into the mid 80's to complete the life cycle of the parisite then they drop off the host that is when salt comes into play, but like I said before I don't know if a molly can live in water that warm, you probably need to research that, by the way you are using aquarium salt ? Did your shop use strip tests or liquid? post the results if you know them gl.

Hi there thanks for that! I am using aquarium salt and they didn't use strips, just water tubes.
Molly has been swimming around wanting to eat and looks normal except tail end down a bit with less movement like it is partly paralysed. She has stringy poo today ( white/clear) and has also finally eaten a bit of pea which is now coming out too! (looked up for treatment for constipation etc and this was suggested from vet prof,. in US.
I'll go back to fish shop shortly. ( i'm in qld - Australia, so it is winter - days of 24 degrees and nights of 10 degrees, so have stuck heater in room to keep consistent temp for her at night)
Thanks for your reply - much appreciated! - I'll put in what fish shop says when I have been.

just got back from fish shop - water tested in 4 different tubes apparently all ok.
Now, with regards to white stringy poo, they said it would be worms and gave me medication - fluke and tapeworm tablets (praziquantel 100mg).
should i have any concerns with this?
Thanks in advance

Well you might try no feeding your fish for a few days, don't worry they can go longer without food than you think, then maybe if it is worms they may start to come out looking for food then you would know for sure.Sorry about your problems I wish someone else here would chime in with more knowledge about this sort of stuff. Get on to this web site www.cichlid-forum.com and look up a member his name is(Toby_H) this guy knows alot about aquariums and fish and I mean ALOT give him a personal message telling him your problem I bet he will give you a lot of very good advice. gl
