My Molly died today. The other night he was active as his usual self, but yesterday afternoon he sunk to the bottom and was laying on his back. He was struggling and trying so hard to get up. I tried to assist him but he would flip over on his back. This morning he was gone.
He was aprox 3 years old and was in a 3 gal tank with an oxygen air filter. He showed no signs of sickness prior to this. I was thinking that if it was an age thing he would have showed signs of slowing down but he didn't, and this is why I am very surprised that he is suddenly got sick and now is gone.

A molly in a 3 gallon??? thats too small. Fish on there back means that they are going to die.Because your tank is small it might be annamonia that killed your fish.

Awe so sorry to hear...:rip:

However yes mollies do get quite big so a bigger tank may have been beneficial. But that was an awfully nice long time for him to live happily!! :fish:

Have you tested that water? When the molly started to show signs of distress, did you test ammonia, nitrite and all of that good stuff?
Did you spray anything near the tank? Like an air freshener or anything like that?
3 years is a long time so could've been old age, but I really don't know much about them let alone their average lifespan.

I'm so sorry that your lil fishy died.... :(

Old age R.I.P.

Could he have had swim bladder disease? He did try to balance himself and was on his head a few times but ended back on his back? Does anyone know if Molly's are prone to this?

Yes, but a fish can show the same symtoms when dying.
Did well to have a livebearer that long.

Thanks for the replies, for all those who gave me advice so I don't repeat the same problem should I get another Molly. It's something I have to chalk up to experience and learn from it and accept it and thank you to those who said it may have been an age thing, it does make me feel better knowing it could have been an age thing?

If stats are fine there no problem in getting another one, buts it always best to issolate a new fish.
Good luck.
